The entire WA baseball community is invited to show their support for this special round across the next two weekends as we raise funds to benefit the Stephen Michael Foundation and its important work in Indigenous communities. Earlier this year, BWA enlisted the help of local Indigenous artist Loretta Egan to design dedicated jerseys for all 11 State League clubs. Non-State League clubs were invited to obtain jerseys and participate in Indigenous Round, too. “In this design it shows the diamond on the field - the circles representing each base, with the wavey lines connecting them. The U shapes represents the players,” Egan said. “Balu (the player) is ready to pitch and the hands represent players leaving their mark like a fingerprint on the game." “Thank you to Loretta Egan for bringing our Indigenous State League jerseys to life,” Baseball WA CEO Lachlan Dale said. “We appreciate these meaningful designs and the support of our clubs and baseballers during such an important initiative. Please join us at the ballpark for the opening game of Indigenous Round, as we’d love to see as many people as possible show their support for Indigenous communities.” Friday night’s opener between Vic Park and Swan Districts will start at 7:00pm. Entry to Empire Ballpark is free and there will be a special Welcome to Country and more acknowledgments throughout the evening. Check out the full schedule HERE. After a bronze medal finish at last year’s national tournament, Kurt looks forward to leading WA Women’s to another strong campaign on the national stage. The Australian Women’s Championships will take place over Easter 2023, with dates and venues to be announced by Baseball Australia shortly. “We are pleased to have Kurt back on board for another women’s nationals campaign, with a really strong group of players expected to represent our state,” Baseball WA CEO Lachlan Dale said. “Kurt also managed the BWA Women’s High Performance Program over the winter and will be a key piece of our women’s pathway moving forward.” BWA High Performance Manager Andy Kyle believes Kurt will have a valuable impact on the future of women’s baseball in WA. “It is exciting to see the growth of the game and the development of women’s baseball across the country. There are some athletic and talented female athletes coming through the system and we are happy to have Kurt Russell at the helm. Kurt has been an integral part of the HP program and is invested in helping the continual development of the women’s program. There are some great opportunities and pathways in this space.” Kurt is excited to be given another opportunity to work with a group of hungry and exciting baseballers. "There is a really positive energy around the women's HP program at the moment and we feel as though we have established a really strong foundation to help propel the program back to the top of Australian women's baseball. There is some really great young talent coming through, and I'm excited to see some of those faces at tryouts this year as these girls look to cement themselves a spot in the team." "The backing I have received from Andrew Kyle and BWA this winter to allow us to put together a women's specific program was really encouraging, and it shows the continued efforts to help grow the game at the top level. Building off that program and our bronze medal last year, we are looking to try and push forward and put ourselves in a position to play for the gold next Easter." December tryout dates will be confirmed in the coming weeks once the assistant coaching staff is appointed. Expressions of interest are now open for female athletes interested in trying out for the WA Women’s State Team.
