West Australian Liam Hendriks has been named the American League’s Reliever of the Month for May.
Hendriks appeared in 13 games for the Chicago White Sox in May, converting eight saves in as many opportunities. He did not allow an earned run in 11 2/3 innings, striking out 19 and walking two. Hendriks lowered his 2021 ERA to 2.05 following the impressive month of work. The closer previously won the award with Oakland in June 2019 and August 2020. He is the first White Sox pitcher to be named Reliever of the Month. Congratulations Liam!
West Australian Liam Hendriks converted save opportunities in both games of the Chicago White Sox doubleheader sweep of Baltimore on Sunday morning.
Hendriks became the first White Sox pitcher to earn a save in both games of a doubleheader since Bobby Jenks on September 4, 2010, at Boston. He shut the door with a scoreless inning in a 7-4 game one win, striking out DJ Stewart and Cedric Mullins ahead of getting Freddy Galvis to pop out to finish the Orioles off on 14 pitches. Hendriks returned a few hours later and struck out the side to close out a 3-1 win with another scoreless frame as the White Sox improved to 11 games above .500. He punched out Ryan McKenna before again getting Mullins and Galvis out. Hendriks reduced his season ERA to 2.14 following the pair of strong outings and took his tally to 12 saves in his first season with the White Sox. The 2021 Pro-League program has two new coaches with Jess Williams and Daniel Calverley lined up to lead players through this exciting development program. Williams is a WA player and Perth Heat infielder who coached players in the 2021 MP70 Summer Champs. Calverley comes from Morley Eagles Baseball Club and helped coach the Eastern Phantoms Little League team to a 2020 state title. Pro-League On-Field Coordinator Conor Lourey is pleased to have Williams and Calverley on board, joining Perth Heat and Wembley pitcher Nick Alexiou for this year’s program.
“Our Pro-League players will benefit from such vast coaching experience and leadership,” Lourey said. “We look forward to the season and giving these athletes more development opportunities with a great support system.” Learn more about the Pro-League season HERE. |
