The 2021/22 State League 1 season is off to a flying start with two big weekends in the books. After six action-packed games on Sunday, Wanneroo is the only undefeated side with a 2-0 record, while the Braves and Vic Park are both 3-1. Carine and Swan Districts round out the top five at 2-1. Check out recaps from games on Sunday 10 October: South Perth 1 v Vic Park Belmont 5 Both teams collected four hits but the Reds held onto their early lead, which started with three runs in the first. Three walks and a hit by pitch helped Vic Park jump ahead early, but South Perth got one back in the bottom of the first on Jake Bowey's home run. Lachlan Ballantyne hit an RBI double in the third and a bases-loaded walk brought Vic Park to five runs total in the fifth. Mathew Martin threw five innings with eight first-pitch strikes for the winning side, while Bowey and Caleb Goodwin combined to strike out 10 batters on the mound for South Perth. South Perth is 1-2 and plays Perth on 15 October while Vic Park is 3-1 going into a game v Wanneroo. Carine 8 v Vic Park Belmont 5 Carine Cats took the lead late in the game for an 8-5 victory over Victoria Park Belmont Reds on Sunday. The scoring started when Andre Bello hit into a fielder's choice, scoring one run for Carine in the first. After Vic Park scored one run in the top of the second on a Joshua Cosgrove single, Carine answered with one of their own as Cameron Landy singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run. The Reds scored three runs in the third inning with RBIs for Matthew Reynolds, Zac Meloncelli, and Ryan Boyer. The score was evened at five apiece in the top of the fourth inning when Mathew Martin doubled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run. The game was still tied at five with Carine batting in the bottom of the sixth when Tarrant Reimers doubled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run. Reimers earned the victory on the pitcher's mound for Carine. The ace lasted three and a third innings, allowing five hits and one run while walking zero. Corey Brown took the loss for the Reds. The bulldog allowed five hits and three runs over three and two-thirds innings, striking out two and walking one. Jacob Stanton started the game for Carine. The hurler allowed three hits and four runs over two and two-thirds innings, striking out one. Riley Marsh started the game for the Reds, giving up five runs on five hits over two innings with three strikeouts. Carine had ten hits in the game, including three apiece to Landy and Josh Davies. Boyer and Meloncelli each had multiple hits as the Reds collected eight total. 2-1 Carine plays South Perth next Sunday and the Reds are 3-1 going into a matchup with Wanneroo. Wanneroo 10 v Carine 5 Wanneroo Giants ran off with the lead late in the game for a 10-5 victory over Carine Cats on Sunday. The game was tied at four with Wanneroo batting in the bottom of the fourth when Daniel Bourke hit a solo homer. Carine scored four runs in the first inning with a single by Andre Bello and a fielder's choice by Cooper McDonnell. Wanneroo evened things up at four in the bottom of the second inning. Ben King drew a walk, scoring one run. The Giants pulled away for good with four runs in the fourth inning. Bourke hit a solo homer, Courtney Jones singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run, and Dawson Summers singled on a 2-1 count, scoring two runs. Chris King earned the victory on the hill for Wanneroo, lasting two innings, allowing two hits and one run while striking out one and walking one. Jay Bullingham and Jackson Riley entered the game out of the bullpen to close it out. Declan Phillip took the loss for Carine. The righthander surrendered four runs on four hits over one and two-thirds innings, striking out one. Joel Hughes started the game for Carine, allowing five hits and four runs over two innings. Frazer Brice started the game for Wanneroo, covering two innings, allowing three hits and four runs while striking out two and walking one. Bourke went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Wanneroo in hits as the team collected 12 hits total. Byron Armstrong had multiple hits too. Wanneroo is 2-0 and plays Vic Park next Sunday, while 2-1 Carine takes on South Perth. Swan Districts 2 v Braves 9 Swan Districts watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 9-2 loss to the Braves on Sunday. The winning side scored on a double by Kevin Clark and a single by Joel Beches in the first inning. The Braves also scored three runs in the fifth inning a home run by Ben Drew, while Broadee Binder led the team to victory on the hill. Binder lasted one inning, allowing two hits and zero runs while striking out two and walking zero. Cameron Lamb threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Tyson Noel took the loss for the Swans, allowing five hits and four runs over three innings, striking out four. Daniel Schmidt started the game for the Braves. The lefthander surrendered zero runs on one hit over four innings, striking out five and walking zero. Dan Carter led the Swans with two hits in three at bats while the Braves tallied 12 hits in the game. Masato Nishio went 3-for4 as Beches and Clark each had multiple hits. The 3-1 Braves play Wembley this weekend while the 2-1 Swans take on Rockingham. Morley 5 v Swan Districts 9 Morley Eagles fell 9-5 to Swan Districts Swans on Sunday despite out-hitting them ten to eight. Morley opened up scoring in the first inning when Luke Hughes grounded out, scoring one run. The Swans tied things up at two in the top of the second on a wild pitch before taking the lead for good with two runs in the fourth inning on Bailey-Jay Cooke's sac fly. The Swans went on to score five runs in the sixth inning with RBIs from Cooke, Maddux Stivey, Lewdon Te Mara, Brody Clarkson, and Daniel Johnston. Riley Moore led the Swans to victory on the mound, lasting six innings, allowing nine hits and four runs while striking out six. Stivey threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Koskei Partington-Hopes took the loss for Morley after throwing one inning, allowing zero hits and two runs while striking out one and walking one. Pelkonen started the game for Morley. The hurler allowed three hits and two runs over three innings, striking out six. The Eagles had 10 hits in the game including two for Aaron Bonomi, Brandon Migro, Cody Holt, and Zac McMillin. The side also didn't make any errors as Hughes had the most chances in the field with 11. Morley is 0-2 going into the next game v Gosnells while the 2-1 Swans play Rockingham next. Wembley 1 v Perth 1 Wembley got on the board in the first when Nick Alexiou doubled on a 0-2 count, scoring one run. It wasn't long before Perth tied the game on a groundout in the second inning, and the scores remained level for the rest of the day. Alexiou pitched six solid innings for the Magpies with 13 first-pitch strikes and 10 strikeouts. Kyle Francis covered 4.2 innings for Perth with a 1.29 WHIP, eight first-pitch strikes and three strikeouts. Wembley had five hits total, including two apiece for Alexiou and Riley Spring. Perth didn't make any errors as Edgar Mundarain had six chances to lead the team in the field. Rockingham scored three runs in the seventh inning thanks to singles from Rui Harrison and Mitchell Field and a fielder's choice by Jeff Wishart. Zachary Gomersall was the winning pitcher for Rockingham, going five innings, allowing one run on three hits, and striking out one. Wishart and Josh Eddy entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close it out in relief. Wishart recorded the last four outs to earn the save. Kane Silvi took the loss for the Hawks after going three innings and allowing three runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Adam Millson started the game for the Hawks. The righthander went three innings, allowing zero runs on three hits, striking out one and walking zero Joshua Silvi had a four bagger in the sixth inning for the Hawks on a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Rockingham had 13 hits in the game, including Field's 3-for-4 perfomance and multiple hits for David Nichols, Samuel Sheppard, Finlay Duncan, and Gomersall. Rockingham is 1-2 and plays the Swans next weekend while the Hawks will look for their first win against Morley. Rockingham 2 v Wembley 5 Rockingham fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 5-2 loss to Wembley on Saturday. The Magpies opened the scoring in the first with a double by Nick Alexiou and a single by Alex Osuchowski. Chris Crawford pitched Wembley to victory. The pitcher allowed six hits and two runs over six innings, striking out three. Brock Molloy took the loss for Rockingham. Molloy went five innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and striking out five. Jeff Wishart went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Rockingham in hits while Wembley's Joris Van Ballegooy went 2-for-3. 1-1 Wembley plays Perth on Sunday and 1-2 Rockingham plays the Swans next week. Braves 6 v Morley 2 The Braves took home a 6-2 victory over Morley on Saturday, firing up the offense in the first inning on Tim Kennelly's sac fly. The Braves put up three runs in the fifth inning with a big home run from Ben Drew. Todd Hatcher started the game for the Braves. The pitcher went three and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on one hit and striking out three. Flynn McGahan pitched the Braves to victory, lasting two and a third innings, allowing two hits and zero runs while striking out four and walking one. Sam Kennelly threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Brendan Sing took the loss for Morley. The hurler surrendered six runs on nine hits over five innings, striking out four and walking one. The Braves racked up nine hits in the game as Kennelly went 3-for-3 and Jack Rigden had managed multiple hits too. Mark Hannah led Morley with two hits in three at bats. 0-1 Morley plays the Swans on Sunday and the Braves take a 2-1 record into a game against the Swans too. South Perth 0 v Wanneroo 13 South Perth watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 13-0 loss to Wanneroo on Saturday. The Giants scored on singles by Byron Armstrong and Dawson Summers, a double by Owen Pilcher, and a groundout by Daniel Stephenson in the first inning. One bright spot for the Cubs was a single by Adam Barbarich in the first inning. Tom Bailey started the game for the Giants. The righty went three innings, allowing zero runs on one hit, striking out five and walking zero. Callum Schipp took the win for Wanneroo. The pitcher lasted two innings, allowing one hit and zero runs while striking out one. Lucas John took the loss for the Cubs. The pitcher surrendered six runs on eight hits over three innings, striking out one and walking one. Barbarich led South Perth with two hits in two at bats while Wanneroo racked up 11 hits in the game, including multiple from Nicholas Riley, Summers, and Courtney Jones. Nick Irwin made the most plays with seven as Wanneroo didn't commit any errors in the field. 1-1 South Perth plays Vic Park on Sunday while 1-0 Wanneroo plays Carine. West Australian Liam Hendriks has been named the American League Reliever of the Month for the second time this season and the fourth time in his MLB career.
Hendriks received the honor for September/October after going 8-for-8 in save opportunities for the Chicago White Sox. He gave up just six hits and no walks in 13 2⁄3 innings with 21 strikeouts in 13 appearances. He had seven appearances without a hit and did not give up more than one hit in any game, as his opponents averaged .128 against him over the month. In his first season with the White Sox, Hendriks went 8-3 with a 2.54 ERA, 38 saves, and 113 strikeouts. He made 69 appearances and walked only seven batters, ranking first out of all AL relief pitchers in strikeouts, WHIP, and opponents average and opponents on-base percentage. Hendriks made history last month by becoming the first White Sox pitcher in franchise history to record 30-plus saves and 100-plus strikeouts in a season. The 2021/22 State League 1 Gala Weekend continued on Sunday after Saturday's washouts, with eight teams taking the field at Empire Ballpark for a fantastic day of baseball. After the first week, Vic Park Belmont is 2-0 with the Braves sitting at 1-1 and Carine, South Perth, and Swans all at 1-0. There's another big weekend of games ahead with games scheduled at Rockingham, South Perth, Vic Park Belmont, and Swan Districts for this coming Saturday and Sunday. The game was tied at one with South Perth batting in the bottom of the fourth when Jaxon Limpus drew a walk, scoring one run. The pitching was strong on both sides as South Perth struck out three and gave up just two hits, while Braves pitchers sat down five and allowed six hits. The Cubs opened in the first when Max Wheeler singled on a 1-1 count to bring home a run. The Braves tied things up in the third when Cody Parkinson drew a walk to score a run. Tyler Paull pitched the Cubs to victory, going two and two-thirds innings with zero runs on two hits and no walks. Will Sherriff threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen, recording the last three outs to earn the save. Broadee Binder took the loss for the Braves as the righthander went two-thirds of an inning, allowing one run on one hit. Daniel Schmidt started the game for the Braves, and the lefty went three innings, allowing one run on five hits, striking out one and walking zero. James Watson started the game for South Perth. Watson allowed zero hits and one run over two and a third innings, striking out three. The Cubs racked up six hits, including two apiece for Adam Barbarich and Wheeler. The team didn't make any errors in the field as Patrick Temby made the most plays with seven. The Braves were good in the field too with no errors. Vic Park Belmont Reds 6 v Perth 1 The Reds took out a 6-1 lead thanks to nine hits in the game, including three from Matthew Reynolds. Vic Park Belmont got things started in the first when Zac Meloncelli grounded out, scoring one run. Corey Brown was on the mound for the Reds, throwing four innings, allowing zero runs on three hits, and striking out two. Matteo Pizziconi started the game for Perth. The lefty lasted two innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out three and walking one. Darcy Heppleston and Kyle Francis entered the game from the bullpen, throwing one and two-thirds innings and one-third of an inning respectively. Reynolds and Meloncelli had multiple hits for the Reds while Steve Wrigglesworth went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Perth in hits.
