Best of luck to all our junior baseballers participating in the club championships! The February Festival of Baseball continued on Tuesday night with a rewarding women’s training session and thrilling Women’s Super League Grand Final, which the Force won 4-3 over the Jets.
The action-packed event at Empire Ballpark was made possible through the support of the WA Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries. Youth girls trained with coaches before hearing from guest speaker Rachael Lynch, an International Hockey goalkeeper, coach, and mental health ambassador. She spoke to the girls and women about her time in professional sport, and the valuable role females play in the sporting world. She also discussed team leadership, work ethic, and the daily life of an elite athlete followed by a Q&A. Next, Rachael joined the baseballers for the women’s training session and batting practice. "I had an absolute ball with the girls," she said. "It was wonderful to connect with a group of females who play their sport for the love of it and are aspiring to reach the highest level." "Having a throw and a bat was definitely a highlight - getting a few tips certainly helped." The Jets and the Force later took to the field for the WSL Grand Final. All the offense came in the early innings before both sides buckled down defensively with the game on the line. The Jets took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to a pair of RBIs by Yuuki Ishikawa, but the Force got one back in the bottom half. The Force went on to collect 10 hits while holding the Jets to just two, with three runs scoring in the bottom of the second. They held on for the victory after five exciting innings, as Leah Cornish plated three with two big hits while Megan Everitt had three hits. Congratulations to the Force and well done to both teams on a fantastic Women’s Super League season! Baseball Australia has locked in its inaugural National Junior Squad, with nine WA athletes making the cut after shining at the 2021 Rays Baseball Showcase in January.
Congratulations to:
View the full roster HERE. The squad is set to take part in a camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra from April 3-11 as part of Boral Team Australia’s preparations for the 2021 WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup in Florida. Players were chosen following an in-depth review of information collected at the National Showcase Series events around the country earlier this year. Baseball Australia national player development manager Andrew Riddell said the expanded junior squad and camp would be a key step in the development of the chosen athletes. “We are impressed with the talent that was showcased in January and can’t wait to get them into the AIS in a camp environment and see how they measure up against each other,” Riddell said.
