West Australian Liam Hendriks has made history, becoming the first pitcher to claim the Mariano Rivera American League Reliever of the Year award in consecutive seasons.
Hendriks was named the 2021 winner after a dominant debut season with the Chicago White Sox. He went 8-3 with a 2.54 ERA, an AL-leading 38 saves, 113 strikeouts, a 0.73 WHIP, .174 opponents average and just seven walks in 69 regular-season relief appearances. Hendriks claimed the same honour with the Oakland Athletics in 2020 and became the first White Sox pitcher to be named AL Reliever of the Year since the award began in 2014. In 2019 he finished runner up to New York Yankees’ Aroldis Chapman for the award. Hendriks led qualified MLB relievers in strikeouts, and AL relievers in WHIP and strikeout-to-walk ratio (16.14) in 2021. His strikeout-to-walk mark established a Major League record (minimum 100 strikeouts), surpassing the previous mark set by Clayton Kershaw (15.64) in 2016. Hendriks joined Kenley Jansen in 2017 (109 strikeouts, seven walks) as the only pitchers in history to strike out 100-plus batters with seven or fewer walks in a season. The former Perth Heat Australian Baseball League arm did not issue more than one walk in any appearance in 2021. He was almost impossible to hit down the stretch with just one run allowed in his final 19 appearances, including 10 hits, one walk, and 31 strikeouts in 21 innings. He saved 12 straight during that stretch and finished off the team’s division-clinching victory in Cleveland. Hendriks was named to his second career All-Star team, becoming the first Australian selected for the showcase twice. He was also named AL Reliever of the Month in May and September/October. Baseball WA Annual General Meeting The Annual General Meeting of Baseball WA Limited will be held on Wednesday 10 November 2021 at 8:00pm at Dept LGSCI - 246 Vincent St, Leederville, WA 6007. View the official notice HERE. Baseball WA Staff Announcement – Glen Tovey Baseball WA is pleased to announce the appointment of Glen Tovey as our new development officer. Glen will coordinate on-field participation programs and support clubs in upskilling their personnel, including the national coach accreditation scheme. “We are excited for Glen to join the Baseball WA team. His experience and passion for grassroots baseball is exceptional and we are confident he will deliver a high standard on the field through our participation and development programs,” Baseball WA CEO Lachlan Dale said. “We know the baseball and tee-ball community will benefit from Glen’s contributions and we are looking forward to a bright future as we further develop and grow our sport.” Glen starts with Baseball WA on Monday 8 November 2021 in time for an action-packed few months of participation programs. “I’m very grateful for this opportunity to serve the baseball community. I can’t wait to get started working with athletes and coaches to ensure the best experience,” Glen said. WA Baseball Umpires Association Thanks largely to the efforts of Chris Rapley, with support from David Gripper, Lou Bonomi and Peter Bowie, a significant drive was made to have a true base of community accredited umpires as per new guidelines from Baseball Australia. This program was a revamping of the old green shirt program. Approximately 80 candidates were put through this 3-hour program across three dates in September and October. The program consisted of the necessary occupational health and safety requirements and then moved on to provide detailed instruction for plate umpires followed by base umpire responsibilities and some basic rule knowledge. Plate umpiring consisted of suiting up the candidates with all protective equipment and some detailed instruction for defining the strike zone before setting them up behind a catcher and accepting pitches from a pitching machine. Corrections were made along the way in an attempt to put the umpire in the safest position to be able to call a good strike zone. Base umpiring was conducted on a reduced sized diamond indoors. The candidates were stepped through the correct positioning and mechanics for all the plays they would likely be confronted with during a junior game. At times several options were provided where the defensive team made a play at one or more bases. General rule discussion was carried out in relation to fair/foul, catch/no catch, and infield fly rules. After the course, the candidates were then requested to complete an online assessment of 30 multiple choice questions in their own time at home. A successful pass mark of 75% in this assessment was required for the candidates to be awarded their community umpire accreditation certificate along with their green shirt, ballbag and indicator. We hope that these umpires now move on to umpiring Little League, Junior League, Intermediate League, and Senior League games in the near future. It is absolutely paramount that these umpires are protected from any form of confrontation while they are learning the craft. Clubs have been requested to provide umpire officials to attend games and report on any issues during the games from both players, managers, spectators, and the umpires themselves. This training is provided totally free of charge by WA Baseball Umpires Association and these programs will be conducted again prior to the start of next season. David Gripper - President Champions Cup – Under 13s, Under 15s & Under 17s This season will see the introduction of the Champions Cup (formally Club Championships) held as a 4-day tournament from 27-30 January 2022 at Empire Ballpark and Tom Bateman Reserve. Team nominations will be due in mid-November, so we encourage interested players to liaise with their club to find out more information. Clubs can enter more than one team into each age group and those clubs who do not have enough players to form their own team are encouraged to join with other clubs as a combined team. 2022 MP70 Summer Classic The Machine Pitch MP70 Summer Classic is back! Registration is now open for the third annual tournament, set for 17-20 January 2022 at Empire Ballpark. Players aged 9-13 from across Western Australia are encouraged to get involved. Senior Regulations As presented to clubs prior to the season starting, the new bat regulations have been simplified to make it easier for everyone to understand. Either the BBCOR Certified or USA Baseball stamps must be visible for the bat to be used. Please refer to the Senior Baseball Competition Regulations for complete bat regulations. Junior By-Laws Little League - Intentional Walks: defensive teams are able to elect to intentionally walk a batter by announcing the decision to the plate umpire. After the appropriate notification is made by the defensive manager, the ball is ruled dead and no other runners may advance unless forced by the batter’s award of first base. Once the award is granted, four pitches will be added to the defensive pitcher’s official pitch count. Intermediate League - 8 run rule: changes to the junior by-laws this season saw the introduction of an 8 run rule for Intermediate League, so the offensive inning is complete with a 3rd out or the 8th run. 2022 Rays Showcase Baseball WA is excited to announce tryouts for the 2022 Rays Showcase Perth, which will take place at the start of January 2022. After the success of this year’s program, we are looking forward to another fantastic showcase for our dedicated athletes. The Rays Showcase is not just another baseball training camp or a normal National Youth Championship program. Athletes experience day-to-day life in an elite program supported and endorsed by the Tampa Bay Rays. The schedule mimics their spring training and the start of a minor league season - with a focus on athlete development both on and off the field. Players will be surrounded by a range of opportunities to enhance their knowledge and abilities in key areas for success both locally and internationally. The focus of this program is NOT for you to sign a professional contract or go to US college, these are just opportunities that will come your way once you learn to: ● compete fearlessly (even when you are terrified). ● be disciplined. ● be organised. ● be a great teammate and an even better person. It will be your job as the player: ● to push yourself and hold yourself accountable when you could easily bluff your coach or yourself. ● to focus on what you can control and execute no matter how tough the situation. ● use all of the amazing resources around you to improve your approach each and every day. Goals and objectives: ● learn to thrive in a daily training environment. ● create impeccable habits. ● learn the discipline required of an elite athlete. ● provide support and opportunities to learn. ● have lots of fun. Expectations: ● commitment - doing the small things each and every day will yield far greater results than doing the big things infrequently. ● effort - try as hard as you can even when you think you might fail. ● measure only what you can control - if you can't control it, don’t worry about it. Focus on the process, not the result. ● no excuses - plain and simple: don’t make them. ● balance - creating balance in your life is important, so make time for your family and friends, do your homework and make time for the things you love to do. Interested participants should register for tryouts, which will take place at Empire Ballpark in Thornlie on the following dates: Under 18s – Tuesday 16 November 2021 from 5-8pm Under 16s – Thursday 11 & 18 November 2021 from 5-8pm Specific details about the program will be communicated to everyone at the showcase tryouts.
