Kerry Wither was recruited to Western Australia in 1974 by Western Australian and Australian coach, Rodney Byrne. Kerry brought with him a wealth of experience from the New South Wales State League (Mosman Club), NSW Claxton Shield and Australian International teams.
After arriving in W.A., Kerry represented WA in 5 Claxton Shield Series and has the distinction of being vice-captain and a key player in 3 National Championship teams.
Kerry was a dominant player when representing Australia both overseas and domestically. In 1971, after being scouted by Japan, Kerry was offered a significant contract to join the Tokyo Giants in the Japanese Major Leagues. He was, at the time, the first Australian to be recruited to the Japan Major Leagues. Unfortunately, due to personal and professional commitments in Australia, Kerry was unable to take up the offer.
Occupying the 3 through 5 slots in the lineup, Kerry was recognised by his teammates and opponents as a power hitter who also hit for average. As a fielder, he was rock solid at both 1st and 3rd base. Most importantly, he was at his best in clutch situations as he consistently produced when the game was on the line.
Below are some of the highlights of Kerry’s career:
- Team Australia Member – (1971 –BFA Series, Seoul; Korea); (1973 –BFA Series, Manilla); (1973 – Australian domestic goodwill tour versus Japan); (1974 – Australian domestic goodwill tour against the Japanese company / Industrial team Sankyo Seiki); (1978 – Australian Overseas Touring team to Holland and Italy); (1979 – Australian domestic goodwill tour versus Korea).
- 1975/76 – BWA Presidents Medal – State League Fairest and Best
