Play Ball! The Story of Our Game
At our 2025/26 Awards Night, we were proud to officially announce and support the launch of Play Ball! — a landmark publication capturing the story of baseball in Western Australia and across the country.
Play Ball! is a wide-ranging history of baseball in WA and Australia, tracing its journey from the 1890s to today. Illustrated with over 400 photographs, the book explores the sport’s struggle for recognition amid cricket and Australian Rules football dominance. A major contribution is the attention to women—not just as players, but as administrators and organisers. The book also examines the impact on WA baseball of shifting national identity, postwar US influence, baseball’s Olympic highs and lows, the rise of the Australian Baseball League and the WA players in Major League Baseball. Besides stories of boom and bust, Play Ball! offers a rich, browsable portrait of baseball’s evolving contribution to Australian sport and culture.
From grassroots volunteers and pioneers, to elite athletes and modern-day pathways, Play Ball! captures the legacy we’re proud to be part of today.
