Western Australia Advance to Two Gold Medal Games
Western Australia will compete for two national championships after an outstanding Day 6 at the Australian Women’s Championship (AWC) and Australian Youth Women’s Championship (AYWC), with both teams advancing to their respective Gold Medal Games.
WOMEN’S – AWC QUALIFYING FINAL
Western Australia 6 def Victoria 2
It all came down to the final inning and Western Australia delivered when it mattered most.
With the game locked at 2–2 and the bases loaded, Chloe Atkinson stepped up and produced a defining moment, clearing the left field wall for a grand slam to secure a 6–2 win and send WA straight into the Gold Medal Game.
“That’s the kind of moment you picture as a kid,” Atkinson said post-game. “I was just trying to stay simple and hit it hard… to see it go was pretty special.”
Atkinson was central to the result, finishing 3-for-4 with 5 RBI and playing a key role behind the plate defensively.
The contest itself was tightly fought from the outset. WA opened the scoring in the first before Victoria responded immediately to take the lead, with both sides trading blows early.
Western Australia drew level in the third through a Caitlin Eynon double, setting up a tense finish between two well-matched sides.
On the mound, Meaghan Haggart laid the foundation, working through five innings and limiting Victoria to two runs. Her ability to escape pressure, including a crucial bases-loaded situation, kept WA within reach.
“I trusted what was working and stuck with it,” Haggart said. “The defence and the catcher backed me in.”
Leah Cornish closed out the game with two scoreless innings, setting the stage for Atkinson’s late heroics.
Western Australia will now meet Victoria once again, this time with the Gold Medal on the line.
YOUTH WOMEN – AYWC FINALS
Western Australia 14 def South Australia 5
Western Australia 10 def New South Wales 4
The Youth Women continued their impressive tournament run, putting together back-to-back wins to remain undefeated and secure their place in the Gold Medal Game.
Against South Australia, WA wasted no time taking control. Early offence set the tone, with Aleigha Auld’s two-run home run highlighting a fast start, while Jamie Vlasic delivered a standout performance both at the plate and on the mound.
Despite a brief push from South Australia, WA responded immediately to maintain control and run out comfortable winners.
That momentum carried into their second game of the day against New South Wales.
Jemma Golding got things rolling early, leading off with a home run, while Stevie Oates was a constant presence on base with three hits. WA’s offence again proved consistent across the lineup, finishing with 11 hits.
Sara Scott added a late home run to put the result beyond doubt.
On the mound, Vlasic led the way with 4.2 strong innings and eight strikeouts, before Summer Hiscock closed the door with a perfect relief outing.
Western Australia controlled the tempo throughout, securing a 10–4 win and locking in their place in the Gold Medal Game.
They will now face South Australia for the championship.
