It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Don Knapp — a truly outstanding contributor to baseball in Western Australia and across the country.
Don’s on-field achievements saw him inducted into both the Australian Baseball Hall of Fame and the Baseball WA Hall of Fame as one of the finest players of his era. But it was his work off the field that truly set him apart, making a profound and lasting impact on our game.
Following his playing career, Don served in key leadership roles with Perth Heat, WA Baseball, and Baseball Australia. His vision, integrity, and tireless efforts helped shape the development of our sport from grassroots to elite levels. In recognition of his enduring contributions, Don was awarded Life Membership of Baseball WA — a reflection of the esteem in which he was held. He later continued his leadership journey beyond baseball as CEO of University Sport Australia, reflecting his deep commitment to sport, education and its role in developing the youth in this country.
In recent years, Don remained active in the baseball community through his work on the Baseball WA Heritage Committee, helping to preserve the stories and legacy of our game.
Don Knapp was more than a player or administrator — he was a great friend, a valued mentor, and a man of the highest integrity. His leadership was principled and generous, and he leaves behind a legacy that will guide and inspire for years to come.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Don’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed.
Rest in peace, Don.
