Womens Super League

Overview
Performance/participation competition for female baseball players as an addition to the existing women’s club competition. Changes for the 2021-22 season are in blue.

Eligibility
There shall be two categories of player:

  • Local – any female player who has been a registered member of a Baseball WA baseball club in any of the previous two seasons.
  • Marquee – any female player who does not qualify as a local player. Marquee players can only be signed up to and including 30 September.

All players shall be League Age 15 years or older as at 31/8/22. Exemptions for younger players will not be considered.

Registration

  • Local players wishing to be drafted shall complete the on-line registration here – note a $10 deposit is payable which will be refunded if you attend the tryout and are not drafted.
  • Registrations closed

Teams

  • Players not already in a WSL team shall nominate annually for the player draft. This includes players whose existing contract expired at the end of the previous season.
  • Each team shall have exactly 14 players on its roster at all times.
  • Each team shall be able to sign a maximum of four (4) different marquee players prior to the cut-off date.

Draft

  • All players not already on a roster shall be drafted into teams each season.
  • The draft format shall be determined by the WSL Commissioner.
  • Teams must continue to draft players up until the full 14 player roster limit is reached.
  • Teams may “pass” in any round without being excluded from further rounds.
  • Any free agent who was a member of a team in the previous season who is drafted by a different team may have their drafting “challenged” by their old team. Under a “challenge” the old team shall be able to immediately draft the player for the same “contract” term as the new club would have “offered”. The “challenging” club shall then lose its next draft pick.

DRAFT TRYOUT
Draft tryouts – September 18 (venue TBA) & September 25 (@ Wanneroo – 10.00am).

Length of Draft Contracts

  • Any player drafted in Rounds 1 to 4 shall receive a three-year “contract”.
  • Any player drafted in Rounds 5 to 8 shall receive a two-year “contract”.
  • Any player drafted in Rounds 9 onward shall receive a one-year “contract”.
  • At the end of the “contract” period, a player shall become a free agent and shall be eligible to nominate for the draft or if marquee, shall be eligible to sign as a marquee.

Game Schedule

  • Games shall be played under the same rules as Big League Div 2.
  • Each team shall play as part of the Big League 2 regular season schedule.
  • A new WSL Cup best-of-five tournament between the WSL teams will be played mid-week at Empire Ballpark.

Specialist Coaching

  • Diamond Fitness will enhance the experience by focusing on the body weight, strength, speed and agility of all athletes by conducting an intro screening, testing and orientation in person and monitoring of progress. Each athlete will receive a 2 day per week training program to do privately (home or local gym) via the Diamond Sports app.
  • An end-of-program assessment will be conducted to assess progress across the program.
  • ​Specialist skills sessions will be provided by the Heat Futures coaching staff.

Inactive Players
The inactive player list has been disbanded.

State Selection

  • Players can only be selected in the Women’s Open State Team if:
    1.  They are part of an active WSL squad, and/or;
    2.  They are a member of the Futures program.
