2023/24 Harcher State League – Week 19 Wrap

Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service Indigenous Round 2024 kicked off on Friday with two huge games at Empire Ballpark and continued throughout the weekend. Thank you to everyone who participated and showed their support.

As the weekend heated up, two of our Harcher State League games were called off due to heat. Check out GameChanger recaps from the rest of the games below and stay tuned for fixture updates throughout the week.

Perth 1, Morley Eagles 0
Both teams were strong on the mound on Friday as Perth defeated Morley Eagles 1-0. Brian (Tanner) Jessen-Dalton started the game for Perth and recorded 21 outs.

Jessen-Dalton struck out 11 batters on the day, giving up seven hits and two walks in seven scoreless innings.

Perth got on the board in the second inning after Jordano Vivona doubled, scoring one run.

Troy Cruz started on the mound for Morley, allowing three hits and one run over six innings, striking out nine and walking one.

Vivona, Brady Oliphant, and Kai Bancesco each collected one hit for Perth. Vivona went 1-for-3 with an RBI while the defence didn’t make any errors. Ben Nesbit had the most chances in the field with 11.

Kieran Chapman, Matt Dixon, and Aaron Bonomi each collected two hits for Morley. It was an error-free day on offense with Reece Thompson taking 12 chances, the most on the team.

Victoria Park Belmont 5, UWA Magpies 2
Victoria Park Belmont were triumphant over UWA Magpies 5-2 on Friday at Empire Ballpark.

Reds were first on the board in the third when Jack Smalpage singled, scoring one run.

Mizuki Akatsuka stepped on the mound first for Vic Park. He gave up zero hits and zero runs over four innings, striking out five with no walks. Mathew Martin appeared in relief.

UWA Magpies starter Oki Takishima gave up three hits and two runs (one earned) over three and two-thirds innings, striking out five and walking four.

Josh Paull led Reds with three hits in four at-bats from the lead off position. Taiyo Kurosawa led the team with two runs batted in on a 1-for-3 day, while Smalpage went 2-for-2.

Reds were sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error as Joshua Greenham made the most plays with nine.

Bass Cooper, Riley Spring, Nick Alexiou, Eita Samukawa, and Bryan Nobles each collected one hit for UWA Magpies. Cooper and Nobles picked up RBIs while the defense turned one double play.

Perth 15, UWA Magpies 1
Jalen McGee drove in four runs on one hit to lead Perth past UWA Magpies 15-1 on Sunday at UWA Sports Park. In the eighth inning, McGee hit a sacrifice fly, scoring two runs.

Perth got on the board in the top of the third inning after Nick Alexiou induced McGee to hit into a fielder’s choice but two runs scored. Brady Oliphant singled to score another run.

Perth scored five runs on three hits in the top of the eighth. Jake White singled and Benjamin Nesbit drew a walk, each scoring a run. McGee hit a sacrifice fly, scoring two runs, and Nathan Driessen drew a walk, scoring one more.

Perth added seven runs on four hits in the top of the ninth. Jordano Vivona hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run, Nesbit singled, scoring one, and McGee was struck by a pitch as another run scored. Driessen hit a 2-RBI single and Oliphant had a 2-RBI double.

White began the game for Perth. The right-handed pitcher gave up five hits and one run over seven innings, striking out five and walking one.

UWA Magpies starter Alexiou gave up eight hits and four runs over seven innings, striking out eight and walking one.

Vivona and Riley Oliphant each come on in relief for Perth and shutdown UWA Magpies.

Perth totaled 14 hits in the game as Oliphant went 3-for-6. Peter Reyes, Kaine Newham, and Nesbit also had multiple hits while Austin Moyle took two of the team’s seven walks. Perth stole eight bases, including three for Reyes.

Alexiou went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead UWA Magpies in hits. Eita Samukawa went 1-for-3 as the second baseman had one run batted in. Joris Van Ballegooy collected two hits in four at-bats.

Braves 4, Swan Districts Swans 0
Braves bested Swan Districts Swans 4-0 on Sunday at Charlie Hodder Baseball Field.

Braves scored in the top of the third after James Smibert hit into a double play and Kevin Clark doubled, each scoring a run.

Matt Kennelly started the game for Braves, giving up no hits or runs over three innings with four strikeouts and a walk. Sam Kennelly and Daniel Schmidt threw scoreless relief innings.

Cameron Liss led things off on the bump for Swan Districts. He gave up four hits and three runs (two earned) over six innings, striking out three and walking five.

Kennelly, Geoff Kerr, Clark, Jack Rigden, and Joel Beches each collected one hit for Braves. Kerr, Clark, and Smibert drove in one run apiece as Beches had two of the team’s four stolen bases.

Dustin Brown led Swans with one hit in two at-bats while Cameron Phelts stole two bases. The defense turned one double play in the game.

Wanneroo Giants 12, Gosnells Hawks 1
Nicholas Riley drove in four runs on one hit to lead Wanneroo Giants past Gosnells Hawks 12-1 on Sunday at Mateljan Park. Riley hit a home run to left field in the second inning, scoring three runs, and hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh, scoring one.

Wanneroo got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Byron Armstrong doubled and Ben King walked, each scoring one run.

Wanneroo added four more runs in the bottom of the second on two hits. Riley homered to left field, scoring three runs, and Courtney Jones drew a walk, scoring one.

Three more Giants came around to score in the eighth to make it a 12-1 ballgame. King tripled, scoring one run, and Chris King homered to left field, scoring two runs.

Tom Bailey pitched four innings in relief for Wanneroo. The right-handed pitcher gave up three hits and zero runs while striking out three and walking one.

Wanneroo’s Jacob Myer started the game, giving up one hit and one run over three innings, striking out five and walking three.

Gosnells starter Riley Hall allowed six hits and seven runs (six earned) over four innings, striking out one and walking six.

Wanneroo totaled 12 hits in the game. Owen Pilcher and Dawson Summers each collected two hits while Riley took two of the team’s eight walks. He also had two out of Wanneroo’s four stolen bases. The defense turned one double play during the game.

Louis Scaramella, Lee Wisby, Luke Houston, and Taj Varga each collected one hit for Gosnells. Houston went 1-for-2 at the plate as the right-handed hitter led the team with one run batted in. Gosnells turned a double play, too.

Rockingham Rams 4, Carine Cats 4
Vinnie Tarantola struck out 10 batters but Rockingham Rams tied Carine Cats 4-4 at Carine Regional Open Space on Sunday. He surrendered three hits and four runs over seven innings while walking six.

Carine got on board in the bottom of the first after Josh Molen singled, a wild pitch was thrown, and Tarrant Reimers doubled, each scoring a run. Reimers took a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-2 in the third.

Rockingham tied it up at the top of the seventh thanks to a groundout by Jesse Sequeira and a walk by David Nichols.

Conor Lourey stepped on the hill first for Carine, giving up five hits and two runs (one earned) over five innings, striking out three and walking three.

Sequeira provided pop in the middle of the lineup with two runs batted in on a 2-for-4 day. Joshua Diggins and Lachlan Cahill collected two hits as well. The defense turned one double play in the game.

Reimers, Molen, and Samuel Gooch each collected one hit for Carine. Reimers and Molen each drove in one run and Bailey Moorfield took two of the team’s six walks. Carine turned a double play, too.

Rockingham Rams 2, Carine Cats 2
Carine and Rockingham tied 2-2 in their second matchup with Rams scoring early on an RBI single by Vinnie Tarantola.

A double by Jesse Sequeira extended the lead to 2-0 in the top of the third inning.

Carine tied the game in the bottom of the third thanks to a steal of home by Samuel Gooch and a double by Conor Lourey.

Tim Robinson stepped on the hill first for Carine. The starting pitcher gave up five hits and two runs over three innings, striking out one and walking none.

Rockingham starter Jax Williams gave up three hits and two runs over three innings, striking out three and walking four.

Gooch, Lourey, and Jordan Power each collected one hit. Lourey went 1-for-2 at the plate as the infielder led the team with one run batted in. Cas Silber had two of the team’s four stolen bases.

Carine’s defense didn’t commit a single error as Josh Molen had the most chances in the field with three.

Joshua Diggins and Tarantola were a force together in the lineup, each collecting two hits for Rockingham with an RBI.
