2023/24 Harcher State League – Week 21 Wrap

It’s time for Harcher State League finals! Wanneroo, Braves, Morley, and Victoria Park Belmont finished top four, with the Reds and Perth facing off in an elimination final this Friday.

Perth 9, Carine Cats 4
The bottom of the lineup helped Perth capture a 9-4 victory over Carine Cats on Tuesday at Empire Ballpark. Kaine Newham, Austin Moyle, and Kai Bancesco combined for five of the team’s nine hits in the victory. They scored five runs and drove in four.

Carine opened the scoring in the first after Lachlan Cooper doubled, scoring two runs.

Perth flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the second, scoring five runs on four hits to take a 5-2 lead. Bancesco took a bases-loaded walk as part of the big inning.

Riley Oliphant earned the win for Perth. The reliever gave up one hit and two runs (one earned) over one and two-thirds innings, striking out two and walking three.

Declan Phillips took the loss for Carine. The right-handed pitcher went one inning, giving up four runs (three earned) on one hit, striking out one and walking three.

Perth starter Ethan Oliphant gave up three hits and two runs over three innings with a pair of strikeouts and three walks. Max Brendon pitched in relief.

Perth collected nine hits in the game. Newham and Moyle were a force together in the lineup, each collecting two hits and two RBIs while batting back-to-back. Bancesco took two walks as the team had patience at the plate with six total bases on balls and four stolen bases.

Cooper went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Carine in hits. Cooper Granland took two of the team’s six walks while the defense turned a double play.

Morley Eagles 4, Wanneroo Giants 1
Morley Eagles defeated Wanneroo Giants 4-1 on Wednesday at Empire Ballpark.

Morley got on board in the top of the first inning after Matt Dixon singled, Luke Hughes walked, Jesse Williams hit into a fielder’s choice, and Benjamin Bird balked, each scoring one run.

Kane Silvi stepped on the bump first for Morley, allowing three hits over five scoreless innings with five strikeouts and no walks. Brendan Sing threw one inning of scoreless ball in relief with no hits, one strikeout, and two walks.

Bird began the game for Wanneroo, giving up two hits and four runs over one inning, striking out one and walking three.

Ulrich Bojarski led Morley with two hits in three at-bats. Williams and Dixon each drove in one run for Morley as the Eagles were sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Alex Hall had the most fielding chances with eight.

Jackson Riley, Jacob Santich, Byron Armstrong, Nicholas Riley, and Daniel Stephenson each collected one hit for Wanneroo. Armstrong went 1-for-3 at the plate as the shortstop led the team with one run batted in.

Wanneroo didn’t commit a single error in the field with Dawson Summers taking nine chances, the most on the team.

Perth 10, Gosnells Hawks 2
Perth defeated Gosnells Hawks 10-2 on Thursday at Empire Ballpark thanks in part to six runs in the fifth inning. Austin Moyle singled, scoring a run, Benjamin Nesbit tripled, scoring two runs, Ronald (Ronnie) Sweeny singled, scoring two runs, and Edgar Mundarain singled, scoring one run.

Perth was first on the board in the opening frame when Sweeny grounded out, scoring one run.

Gosnells took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third as an error scored two runs.

Perth regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning after Brady Oliphant doubled, Peter Reyes singled, and Nesbit walked, each scoring a run.

Jake White began the game for Perth. The starting pitcher didn’t give up any hits in three innings, just two unearned runs with a strikeout and three walks.

Jamie White started on the mound for Gosnells. The lefty surrendered two hits and four runs (three earned) over three innings, striking out none and walking four.

Kaine Newham threw one and two-thirds innings of no-run ball for Perth in relief. The right-handed pitcher allowed zero hits, striking out none and walking two.

Reyes, Moyle, Sweeny, Mundarain, Oliphant, Nesbit, and Josh McGee each collected one hit for Perth. Sweeny provided pop in the middle of the lineup and led Perth with three runs batted in on a 1-for-4 day.

Perth had a strong eye at the plate, collecting 10 walks for the game. Moyle and McGee led the team with three bases on balls each as Nesbit stole two bases and the defense turned one double play.

Riley Hall and Nick Davey each collected one hit for Gosnells. Louis Scaramella drove the middle of the lineup, leading Gosnells with two runs batted in. The defense turned a double play, too.

Braves 17, UWA Magpies 0
Braves defeated UWA Magpies 17-0 on Thursday at Empire Ballpark thanks in part to 13 runs in the fifth inning.

The big rally started as Sam Kennelly singled, scoring two runs and Angus Shand induced Geoff Kerr to hit into a fielder’s choice but one run scored. Daniel Choi and Cable Dont were both struck by a pitch with bases loaded before James Smibert drew a walk and Tucker Smith doubled to score three. An error scored one run, Kennelly doubled, scoring another, and Jack Rigden hit a sacrifice fly, scoring two runs.

Braves jumped out to the lead in the top of the third inning after Rigden singled, scoring one run, and Choi doubled, scoring three runs.

Kennelly led things off on the bump for Braves. The righty gave up zero hits and zero runs over three innings, striking out six and walking two. Daniel Schmidt and Todd Hatcher each came on in relief and shut down UWA Magpies.

Fujiura Masato started the game for UWA Magpies, giving up one hit over two scoreless innings with three strikeouts and three walks.

Braves tallied nine hits in the game with two apiece for Kennelly and Choi, who led the team with four runs batted in from the number eight spot in the lineup. The outfielder went 2-for-3 on the day. Kevin Clark had four of the team’s 13 walks while Joel Beches stole three bases with six total for Braves.

The winning defense didn’t commit a single error in the field as Clark had the most chances with nine.

UWA Magpies 1, Victoria Park Belmont 1
Nick Alexiou struck out 10 batters but UWA Magpies tied Victoria Park Belmont 1-1 at Empire Ballpark on Friday. Alexiou allowed six hits and one run over seven innings while walking one.

Reds opened the scoring in the fourth after Jack Smalpage singled, scoring a run.

UWA Magpies tied it at one in the top of the sixth on a wild pitch.

Mizuki Akatsuka led things off on the hill for Vic Park. The starting pitcher surrendered one hit and zero runs over four innings, striking out five and walking none.

Adam England and Eita Samukawa each collected one hit for UWA Magpies.

Sean Garratt led Reds with two hits in three at-bats. The defense didn’t commit a single error in the field as William Truscott had the most chances with nine.

Rockingham Rams 13, South Perth Souths 4
Lachlan Cahill drove in four runs on one hit to lead Rockingham Rams past South Perth Souths 13-4 on Friday at Empire Ballpark. Cahill walked in the first and fourth innings to score one and hit a 2-RBI single in the third.

Rockingham got on board in the top of the first inning after David Nichols hit a sacrifice fly, Jesse Neretlis singled, Vinnie Tarantola scored after tagging up, and Cahill walked, each scoring one run.

Rockingham scored six runs on four hits in the top of the third inning. Cahill singled, scoring two, Joshua Diggins grounded out, scoring one, Tarantola singled, scoring one, and Nichols singled, scoring two.

Tarantola started on the hill for Rockingham, giving up four hits and four runs over five innings with four strikeouts and seven walks.

Jai Hewitt led things off on the mound for South Perth. The starting pitcher surrendered six hits and 10 runs (six earned) over three innings, striking out one and walking seven.

Neretlis went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Rockingham in hits while Darryl Artis took three out of 13 walks total.

Rockingham was sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Stuart Sara had the most chances with six.

Adam Barbarich went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead South Perth in hits. Brett Walters paced the team with two out of seven walks. The defense turned two double plays in the game.

Rockingham Rams 6, Gosnells Hawks 4
Rockingham Rams snatched the lead late in their 6-4 victory over Gosnells Hawks on Sunday. The game was tied at four in the top of the ninth when Jax Williams singled, scoring two runs.

Rockingham scored first when Mitch Forrest induced Jesse Neretlis to hit into a fielder’s choice but one run scored.

Gosnells scored on a wild pitch to tie it at one in the bottom of the first. Hawks took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning after Sam Forrest doubled, Robin Adamson singled, and Riley Hall singled, each scoring one run.

Rockingham made the score 6-4 in the top of the ninth after Ashton Crouch was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, and Williams singled, scoring two.

Brock Molloy stepped on the bump first for Rockingham. He gave up six hits and four runs over nine innings, striking out five and walking two.

Forrest started on the hill for Gosnells. The righty gave up four hits and one run over five innings, striking out none and walking six.

Rockingham collected nine hits in the game. Number nine hitter Lachlan Cahill showed the depth of the lineup, going 2-for-5 while Williams had two runs batted in.

Rockingham had a strong eye at the plate, tallying nine walks for the game. Vinnie Tarantola, Tomas Swinson, and Darryl Artis led the side with two walks each. Joshua Diggins recorded two of the Rams’ five stolen bases.

Forrest led Gosnells with three hits in four at-bats from the leadoff position. Hall, Adamson, and Forrest each drove in one run.

South Perth Souths 13, Perth 12
There were runs aplenty on Sunday at Inglewood Oval as South Perth Souths outlasted Perth 13-12. South Perth collected 12 hits while Perth had 16.

South Perth built a seven-run lead in the seventh and then held off Perth’s charge on two singles and a home run.

Souths were first on the board when Brett Walters hit a solo home run to right field.

Perth jumped into the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Jordano Vivona doubled, scoring two runs, and Finlay Duncan hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run.

South Perth tied the game in the top of the fifth thanks to a groundout by Caleb Scorer and a walk by Jaxon Limpus.

Perth took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Devon Ramirez-Beaver singled, scoring one run to give Perth the upper hand 4-3.

South Perth captured a 6-4 lead in the top of the sixth when Caleb Goodwin hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run, and Scorer was struck by a pitch, driving in a run.

Jalen McGee doubled, which helped Perth tie the game at six in the bottom of the sixth.

South Perth flipped the game on its head in the top of the seventh, scoring seven runs on four hits to take a 13-6 lead. The biggest blow in the inning was a 2-RBI double by Daniel Atkinson.

Ronald (Ronnie) Sweeny homered to right field, scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth for Perth.
Walters pitched four innings in relief for South Perth. The reliever gave up 11 hits and eight runs (five earned) while striking out three and walking one.

Goodwin started the game for South Perth, giving up two hits and two runs over three and one-third innings, striking out six and walking three.

Riley Oliphant started the game for Perth. He gave up two hits and three runs (two earned) over five innings, striking out two and walking two.

South Perth collected 12 hits in the game with two apiece for Aaron Atkinson, Adam Barbarich, and Jai Hewitt. Scorer, the number nine hitter, led the way with three runs batted in.

Perth tallied 16 hits in the game. Jake White, Kaine Newham, Vivona, Sweeny, Benjamin Nesbit, and McGee each collected two hits for Perth. Sweeny drove the middle of the lineup with three runs batted in on a 2-for-6 day. Brady Oliphant had two of the team’s five stolen bases.

Morley 13, Braves 1
Alex Hall drove in five runs on three hits to lead Morley Eagles past Braves 13-1 on Sunday at Frankland Park. Hall hit an RBI single in the second, a three-run homer in the fourth, and an RBI double in the seventh.

Morley got on board in the top of the second inning after Brandon Migro walked, Aaron Bonomi walked, and Hall singled, each scoring a run.

Morley added four more runs in the top of the fourth inning on three hits. Cody Nicholas grounded out, scoring one run, and Hall homered to left field, scoring three.

Lachlan Waite stepped on the mound first for Morley, giving up two hits over three scoreless innings with four strikeouts and no walks.

Matt Kennelly began the game for Braves. The starting pitcher allowed three hits and three runs over three innings, striking out two and walking three. Kane Silvi, Adam Taylor, Kieren Hall, and Koskei Partington-Hopes each threw shutout innings in relief.

Morley accumulated nine hits in the game as Jesse Williams went 2-for-4. Eagles recorded seven walks and one double play.

Josh Kennelly, Geoff Kerr, and James Smibert had one hit each for Braves.

Swan Districts Swans 6, UWA Magpies 2
Swan Districts Swans beat UWA Magpies 6-2 on Sunday at UWA Sports Park. Swans were first on the board in the opening frame after Anthony Daniele singled, Boston Foot hit into a fielder’s choice, and Brody Clarkson grounded out, each scoring a run.

Cameron Liss pitched four innings in relief for Swan Districts. The reliever gave up one hit and zero runs while striking out eight and walking none.

Foot led things off on the mound for Swans. The starting pitcher allowed one hit and zero runs over three innings, striking out two and walking three.

Oki Takishima started on the hill for UWA Magpies, giving up six hits and six runs over three and two-thirds innings, striking out two and walking six.

Riley Ozanne, Foot, and Daniele each collected two hits for Swan Districts. Daniele drove the middle of the lineup with three runs batted in on a 2-for-4 day.

Swans took seven walks in the game with two apiece for Conor Parry, Michael De Gasperis, and Maverick Hamilton. Swans were sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error as Parry made the most plays with 10.

Riley Spring and Eita Samukawa were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup as each drove in one run for UWA Magpies. William Eastman and Jacob Davila each collected two hits while the defense didn’t commit a single error. Bass Cooper had the most chances in the field with seven.

Victoria Park Belmont 10, Carine Cats 0
Victoria Park Belmont won big over Carine Cats 10-0 on Sunday at Carine Regional Open Space.

Reds got on the board in the top of the fifth inning after Josh Paull drew a walk, scoring one run, an error scored two runs, and Jack Smalpage doubled, scoring two runs.

Vic Park Belmont scored five runs on two hits in the top of the seventh inning. Ryan Boyer drew a walk, scoring one run, Joshua Greenham doubled, scoring three runs, and Curtis Bacon singled, scoring one run.

Mathew Martin started the game for Vic Park. The starting pitcher gave up three hits and zero runs over six innings, striking out nine and walking three.

Jordan Power started on the bump for Carine. He gave up one hit and five runs (one earned) over four and two-thirds innings, striking out four and walking four.

Callum Hurrelbrink pitched one inning of scoreless ball for Vic Park in relief with zero hits, striking out two and walking none.

Sean Garratt, Smalpage, Greenham, and Bacon each collected one hit for Reds. Greenham led with three runs batted in on a 1-for-3 day with two walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, collecting nine walks for the game.

Jack Angeloff, Samuel Gooch, and Bailey Moorfield each collected one hit for Carine. The defense turned one double play.
