2023/24 Harcher State League – Week 3 Wrap

It was a busy weekend in Harcher State League with nine action-packed matchups. Carine, Wanneroo, South Perth, Morley, Victoria Park Belmont, and Braves all came away with victories as the season heats up.

Carine Cats 3, Perth 0
The bottom of the lineup helped Carine Cats capture a 3-0 victory over Perth on Friday at Empire Ballpark. Joel Hughes, Carlos Salas, and Jordan Power combined for four of the team’s eight hits, scoring two runs.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Carine pitchers struck out nine, while Perth sat down five.

Carine got on the board in the fifth inning after Aden Browne singled, scoring two runs.

Tarrant Reimers earned the win for Carine, giving up two hits and no runs over six innings with eight strikeouts.

Jake White stepped on the mound first for Perth, allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) over five and two-thirds innings, striking out four and walking three.

As Carine’s number seven hitter, Power led the team with two hits in three at-bats. Browne led Carine with two runs batted in, going 1-for-3 on the day.

Edgar Mundarain, Kaine Newham, and White each collected one hit for Perth. They turned two double plays in the game.

Wanneroo Giants 10, Rockingham Rams 3
The bottom of the lineup helped Wanneroo Giants capture a 10-3 victory over Rockingham Rams at Empire Ballpark. Daniel Stephenson, Dawson Summers, and Daniel Bourke combined for four of the team’s eight hits in the victory. They scored four runs and drove in three.

Wanneroo was first on the board in the opening frame as an error scored a run. The Giants added to their early lead in the top of the second inning after Bourke hit a sacrifice fly and Drake Angeron singled, each scoring one run.

Jackson Riley started for Wanneroo. The righty didn’t give up any hits or runs, just a pair of walks and two strikeouts in the first inning.

Rob Sorensen pitched four innings in relief for Wanneroo. The reliever allowed two hits and one run (zero earned) while striking out five and walking four.

Josh Eddy started on the bump for Rockingham, giving up five hits and five runs (two earned) over four innings with two walks and five strikeouts.

Bourke seized on their opportunities, leading Wanneroo with two runs batted in from the number nine spot in the lineup. The right-handed hitter went 2-for-3 on the day.

Bourke and Angeron each collected two hits for Wanneroo. Angeron had four of the team’s five stolen bases.

Vinnie Tarantola went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Rockingham in hits. Joshua Diggins took two walks as the team had a strong eye at the plate, tallying up six walks in the game.

Next up for Wanneroo is a game against Gosnells on Friday, while Rockingham heads to the Hawks for a Sunday matchup.

South Perth Souths 4, Swan Districts Swans 2
South Perth Souths defeated Swan Districts Swans 4-2, despite giving up an early lead on a Brody Clarkson double in the second.

South Perth took the lead after scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth. They added two more in the fifth.

Jake Bowey earned the win for South Perth, allowing six hits and two runs over five and two-thirds innings, striking out two and walking two.

Cameron Liss took the loss for Swan Districts. The righty went five innings, allowing four runs on five hits, striking out five and walking four.

Leadoff hitter Jaxon Limpus led South Perth with two hits in three at-bats. Jai Hewitt and Cameron Landy were tough to handle at the plate, driving in a run each.

The winning team didn’t make any errors as Limpus had the most plays with six.

Clarkson, Ashton Hamilton, Anthony Daniele, Riley Ozanne, Dan Carter, and Cameron Phelts each collected one hit for Swan Districts, while Clarkson and Michael De Gasperis had RBIs.

Swan Districts had an error-free day in the field with a team-high five chances for Clarkson.

The Swans head to Carine on Saturday and South Perth hosts Perth this Sunday.

Morley Eagles 6, UWA Magpies 4
Morley’s doubleheader with UWA Magpies started with a 6-4 victory, which saw the Eagles come back from four runs down.

Morley didn’t take the lead until later in the game. It was tied at four in the top of the seventh when Adrian Blount drew a walk, scoring one run.

UWA Magpies got on the board in the bottom of the third inning after Matthew Reyes singled, scoring one run, Riley Spring doubled, scoring two runs, and Joshua Houston singled, scoring one run.

Morley tied the game up in the top of the sixth thanks to three singles, including an RBI base hit for Matt Dixon.

Lachlan Waite started for Morley, allowing seven hits and four runs over three and two-thirds innings with no walks and three strikeouts.

Kodai Hamaya led things off for UWA Magpies, giving up 10 hits and six runs in six and one-third innings with five strikeouts and two walks.

Morley’s Brendan Sing pitched three and one-third innings of zero-run ball in relief with no hits, just one walk and two strikeouts.

The Eagles tallied 10 hits in the game, including two apiece for Jesse Williams, Kieran Chapman, and Dixon, who had two RBIs. Williams and Ulrich stole multiple bases in the game, too.

William Eastman, the number nine hitter for UWA Magpies, led the team with two hits in three at-bats. Spring provided pop in the middle of the lineup and led UWA Magpies with two RBIs. The infielder went 1-for-3 on the day.

Victoria Park Belmont 17, Gosnells Hawks 2
Jack Smalpage drove in four runs on three hits to lead Victoria Park Belmont past Gosnells Hawks 17-2 on Sunday at Forster Park. Smalpage hit a two-run home run to left field in the third inning after an RBI double in the second.

The Reds jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first after Sean Garratt homered to left field, scoring two runs. Scott Comb drew a walk to score a run, Ryan Boyer brought in a runner on a sacrifice fly, and a wild pitch allowed two more to cross the plate.

Vic Park scored seven runs in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly by Edwin Satisky and Smalpage’s double. Cody Van Der Graaf, Josh Paull, and Taiyo Kurosawa all drew bases-loaded walks before an error brought two runs home.

The Reds added to the score when Smalpage homered in the third.

Mathew Martin stepped on the bump first for Vic Park. He allowed five hits and two runs over five innings, striking out five and walking one.

Calvin Butler started on the mound for Gosnells, allowing four hits and 12 runs (11 earned) over one and two-thirds innings, striking out two and walking seven.

The Reds had a strong eye at the plate, tallying 11 walks for the game. Van Der Graaf, Garratt, Kurosawa, and Paull led the team with two walks each. The Reds were sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Satisky had the most fielding chances with six.

Riley Hall, Luke Houston, Butler, Maclin Berry, and Jamie White all collected one hit for Gosnells Hawks. Houston and White picked up an RBI each.

Gosnells take on Wanneroo on Friday night and Vic Park plays at home on Sunday against Carine.

Wanneroo Giants 8, Carine Cats 4
Wanneroo Giants bested Carine Cats 8-4 on Sunday at Mateljan Park.

An error put Carine on the board in the top of the third, although Wanneroo flipped the game on its head with a five-run bottom of the fourth. The Giants took a 5-2 lead on five hits, with a big single by Nicholas Riley after a seven-pitch at-bat driving in two runs.

Tom Bailey earned the win for Wanneroo. The righty allowed three hits and two runs (one earned) over four innings, striking out three and walking three.

Jacob Myer opened the game for Wanneroo, giving up two hits and two runs (zero earned) over three innings, striking out two and walking four.

Conor Lourey stepped on the hill first for Carine. The starting pitcher surrendered nine hits and five runs over five innings, striking out five and walking three.

Frazer Brice tossed two innings of scoreless ball for Wanneroo Giants in relief. The righty surrendered zero hits, striking out two and walking none.

Wanneroo Giants tallied 12 hits in the game. Ethan Cooper, Jacob Santich, Dawson Summers, and Drake Angeron each collected two hits. Byron Armstrong provided pop in the middle of the lineup with three runs batted in. The 3-hole hitter went 1-for-4 on the day.

Josh Molen went 2-for-5 at the plate to lead Carine in hits. First baseman Tarrant Reimers had one run batted in and went 1-for-4.

Carine had a strong eye at the plate, recording seven walks in the game. Cooper McDonnell and Josh Davies led the way with two free passes each.

Both teams had one double play throughout the game.

Wanneroo Giants play at home on Friday against Gosnells while Carine heads to Swan Districts for a Saturday matchup.

South Perth Souths 6, Swan Districts Swans 2
South Perth Souths were triumphant over Swan Districts Swans 6-2 on Sunday at Collins Oval.

The Souths got on the board in the bottom of the second inning after Oliver McMahon singled and Noah Green hit into a fielder’s choice, each scoring one run.

Swan Districts tied the game up at two in the top of the fourth thanks to two doubles.

South Perth made it 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth after Adam Barbarich doubled, scoring two runs, Simon Baumer hit a sacrifice fly, and Cameron Landy had an RBI single.

Joseph Ranford earned the win for South Perth, giving up no hits or runs over one and two-thirds innings, striking out five and walking one.

Warwick Saupold stepped on the hill first for South Perth, allowing one hit and zero runs over two innings, striking out four and walking none.

Dillian Clarkson opened the game for Swan Districts, giving up eight hits and six runs over four and one-third innings with two walks.

Baumer tossed two innings of zero-run ball for South Perth in relief. He gave up three hits with one walk and one strikeout.

South Perth piled up 10 hits in the game with Landy leading the way going 3-for-3. Barbarich drove the middle of the lineup, leading the team with two runs batted in on a 1-for-3 day. Jake Bowey and McMahon had multiple hits as well.

De Gasperis and Anthony Daniele were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup, as each drove in one run for the Swans. Daniele went 2-for-4 to lead the way while Cameron Phelts stole two of the team’s four stolen bases.

Swan Districts turned one double play and didn’t commit a single error as Brody Clarkson took the most chances with seven.

The Swans visit Carine on Saturday and South Perth hosts Perth for a Sunday home game.

Braves 7, Perth 3
Braves bested Perth 7-3 on Sunday at Frankland Park. Perth opened the scoring in the first on an Edgar Mundarain double.

Jack Rigden’s double gave the Braves a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second.

Kevin Clark homered to center field, scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth for the Braves.

Two more Braves runs crossed the plate in the seventh inning to extend the lead to 7-1. James Smibert hit a solo home run to right field, and an error scored one run.

Sam Kennelly earned the win for Braves. The right-handed pitcher allowed five hits and one run (zero earned) over six innings, striking out five and walking none.

Brian (Tanner) Jessen-Dalton started the game for Perth, giving up three hits and three runs (one earned) over four innings, striking out eight and walking five.

Daniel Schmidt threw two innings of shutout ball for Braves in relief. The left-handed pitcher allowed one hit, striking out one and walking none.

Clark and Smibert each collected two hits for Braves, while Clark and Rigden had a pair of RBIs. Geoff Kerr led Braves with three walks as the team took nine walks total and Joel Beches stole two bases.

Braves turned three double plays in the game.

Mundarain drove the middle of Perth’s lineup with two RBIs on a 4-for-4 day at the plate.

Next up for Braves is a game at Morley on Sunday while Perth plays South Perth on the road.

Morley Eagles 9, UWA Magpies 4
Morley Eagles ousted UWA Magpies 9-4 on Sunday at UWA Sports Park. The second game of the doubleheader saw Morley jump on the board with an RBI single by Luke Hughes in the first.

Morley added to their score with a solo homer by Josh Silvi in the second, followed by another RBI base hit for Hughes in the third.

Four more Morley runs crossed the plate in the fifth to extend the lead to 7-0. Matt Dixon hit a solo home run to left, Kieran Chapman singled, and Adrian Blount drew a walk, all resulting in runs scored.

Adam Millson stepped on the hill first for Morley, giving up four hits and zero runs over four innings with a walk and a strikeout. Alex Hall, Adam Taylor, and Kieren Hall each threw scoreless innings in relief.

Chris Crawford started the game for UWA Magpies, giving up six hits and seven runs (six earned) over five innings, striking out two and walking four.

Hughes led Morley with two runs batted in and a pair of stolen bases, while Hall took three of the team’s eight walks.

Morley was sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Chapman had the most chances with seven.

Joshua Houston and Jake Willson each collected two hits for UWA Magpies. Willson, Bass Cooper, Nick Alexiou, and Adam England each drove in a run.

Morley hosts Braves on Sunday and UWA Magpies heads to Swan Districts.
